WHAT IS PHLEBOTOMY?


The job role of a phlebotomy deals with the art of extracting and drawing blood from an individual for performing laboratory health tests or blood transfusion. The job role of a phlebotomist might also involve collecting the samples of urine.   

Phlebotomist’s can be found providing allied help to several lab technicians, nurses and doctors working in hospitals. Doctors strongly rely on the samples of blood collected in order to diagnose a wide range of diseases and access the general health of the patient. Phlebotomist’s are also found playing a major role in centers of blood bank, where the whole community gets gathered to supply plasma for blood transfusions and other medical procedures.
Phlebotomist’s can be found working in a wide variety of medical centers including hospitals, medical centers, commercial laboratories and private clinics. Some of the skills required by a phlebotomist to perform extractions of blood with ease are discussed below.
1.   Ability of a phlebotomist to insert needles quickly with in the veins of a patient.
2.   Taking caution in drawing blood and acquiring sterile samples.
3.   Ability to maintain standards of safety.
4.   Having a good behavior with patients.
Ability to deal and handle difficult situations and difficulties.
